Syracuse University Abroad Spring 2010 Named Scholarships (SU students only)
Named Scholarship Applications Due by November 1, 2009
Friends of the University have made generous contributions which enable us to award scholarships for specific study abroad experiences for SU students. These named scholarships are described below. Interested SU students should submit a Named Scholarship Form with a letter of candidacy that addresses the academic, career, and personal goals you want to achieve during your study overseas.

All PROGRAMS:
- The Knowlton C. Foote, Ph.D. and Constance Canfield Foote Scholarship
Awarded on the basis of academic merit and financial need. Preference given to School of Education students - The Alvin S. Meltzer Endowed Scholarship Fund.
Awarded on the bases of academic merit and financial need. Preference is given to students enrolled in a program of study related to marine ecology or Mediterranean culture. - The JoAnn Heffernan Heisen Scholarship.
Awarded on the basis of academic merit and financial need. Award is restricted to SU students who come from single parent households. - Margaret A. Charters Education Abroad Scholarship.
Awarded to an undergrad student enrolled in the School of Education. Preference is given to minority students enrolled in Inclusive, Early Childhood or English Education program, or a student who stand out in K-12 Literacy. - The Christopher and Jennifer Jones Memorial Scholarship.
Awarded on the basis of academic merit and financial need. Designed to enhance the study abroad experience, the award may be applied to course fees or other billed expenses. - Niemczycki Endowed Scholarship Fund
Awarded on the basis of academic merit and financial need. Preference is given to College of Arts & Sciences and Newhouse School of Public Communications students.
ALL EUROPEAN PROGRAMS:
- The Muriel S. Alper Memorial Award
Awarded for study in Madrid, Florence, Strasbourg(France) or London on basis of academic merit and financial need.
FLORENCE
- The Susan Bender-Scheer and Perry J. Scheer Scholarship
Awarded for study in Florence on the basis of academic merit and financial need. Preference given to student whose major is Italian or other foreign language, or Art History.
CHINA: Hong Kong & Beijing
- The Anthony Yeh Scholarship
There are two scholarships available. The first, to a student participating in a semester or year of study in Hong Kong; and the second, to a student participating in a semester or year of study in Beijing. The scholarship is awarded on the basis of combined academic achievement and financial need. - Connie So Heung Chiu and Eddie Sin Po Chiu Scholarship.
Awarded on the basis of academic merit and financial need to a student enrolled in the College of Arts & Sciences and plans to study abroad in China.
LONDON
- The James Capolongo Engineering Scholarship
Awarded to a student enrolled in a program of engineering/computer science. Full-year students are awarded twice. - Alexia Foundation of World Peace Scholarship (fall only)
1st and 2nd place awards are applied toward London fall semester tuition and program fees for students to study photojournalism and work on projects. Applicants must submit photos to the Alexia Competition by February 1st for the following fall. Three merit scholarship winners are also awarded grants by SU Abroad toward tuition expenses. (All students – graduate and undergraduate)
MADRID
- The James Capolongo Engineering Scholarship
Awarded to a student enrolled in a program of engineering/computer science. Full-year students are awarded twice.

AUSTRALIA, UNIVERSITY OF QUEENSLAND
- Awarded through the generosity of Education Australia via The University of Queensland, this scholarship is available to a Syracuse University student studying at the University of Queensland. The Scholarship will be awarded based on need and merit. Please complete the SU Named Scholarship Application (above) and the Education Australia application. Please note both applications are due by October 25, 2009.
ISRAEL
- David B. Gelles Scholarship
Awarded for study in Israel (SU World Partners Program) on the basis of academic merit and financial need.
TURKEY
- SU Abroad Turkey Gift Fund
Awarded for study in Turkey (SU World Partners Program) on the basis of academic merit and financial need.
