Visas

Visas

A visa is official permission by a foreign government to visit that country for a specified purpose and a limited time. The visa is stamped onto one of the pages of your passport and generally is not a separate document.

NOTE:

The following information applies only to US citizens. If you are a citizen of a foreign country, or if you have dual citizenship, please visit the Non-US Citizens: Passports & Visas page.

Applying for a Visa

When applying for visas, always retain a copy of original documents you send. Most consulates require in-person visa applications. It is wise to register all letters containing passports and documents. Be sure to enclose stamped, self-addressed envelopes (with sufficient postage if needed). Passports and visa documents should be sent through a tracking, overnight courier such as Federal Express or Express Mail.

Student Visas

You must have a passport in order to apply for your student visa. If you are a U.S. citizen, you will need a student visa or travel documents to study in France, Hong Kong, Spain, England, and Italy. Students should click on “Visa Information” under their country link on the SU Abroad website.

Tourist Visas

If you are a U.S. citizen, you can enter most countries in Europe without obtaining a visa ahead of time.

For the latest information on specific visa requirements for U.S. citizens, contact your local passport agency or read the Department of State's Foreign Entry Requirements.
