Course Description

FIA300.4 : Masterpieces of British Art

Description:

The course will focus on major painters in Britain from Henry the VIII to the present, London today being an internationally acclaimed and vibrant centre of the arts. British Art will be studied through the development of different genres --such as Portraiture, Landscape and History painting-- and through historical events which deeply affected the arts, such as Iconoclasm. We shall also examine the context in which the works were, and are today, produced and the purposes they were supposed to fulfill. Patronage (private and public) will also be taken into account. Learning how to read the works of art by studying their iconography will be an essential part and students will be able to test theories put forward in class in front of original works during weekly visits to museums and galleries. The course will end with a grand finale: the viewing of Britain's most eagerly anticipated yearly event in Contemporary Art, the Turner Prize (whose winner is announced in December), which plays a significant role in provoking debate about visual art and has become widely recognised as one of the most important and prestigious awards for the visual arts in Europe.
