Course Description

ARC500.3 : Sustainable Housing in London: Past, Present, Future

Description:

The course begins with an overview of the history of the home in London by exploring London’s significant housing typologies: the terrace, the mews, the mansion block, the semi-detached, the tower block, etc. Students will be encouraged to investigate the social, environmental and technological impact that these typologies have on the way we live: appropriate densities, sense of community, adaptability/flexibility, privacy, visual amenities, outdoor space, air quality, acoustic separations, waste management, etc. We then investigate how sustainable building is being introduced into contemporary UK housing schemes and its challenges. Site visits play a key part in the course curriculum.
