MAG400.1 : Travel Writing and New Media
Description:
This course examines the relationship between word and image, script and video, in the production of narratives while travelling abroad. Students are asked to read, view and critique short works of writing and filmmaking; to practice making several short, experimental pieces of writing and videomaking themselves; and to produce a longer narrative project involving a combination of writing and videography. While the major work students produce will ostensibly focus on a specific topic related to their travels abroad – a person, a work of art, a monument, a street, a pub, an event, a journey – at some stage nearly all stories of travel become, as Nicolas Bouvier suggests, more about the making or unmaking of oneself. This course, then, enables students to intertwine two powerful and creative forms of representation in order to frame and narrate some aspect of their lives while studying abroad.
Limited enrollment: to be considered, students should indicate their interest on the application form and list it among the first five choices on their Course Request form. Enrollment priority given to SU Newhouse magazine and television/radio/film majors. Meets with TRF 400.1.
