ECN365 : The World Economy: Theory & Practice
Description:
The study of international trade and of international money is increasingly important as the world becomes more integrated. This course offers a theory-based economics upgrade to your existing knowledge of the domestic economy. It closely follows the prescribed text to introduce you to economic models of trade and tariffs for the two-country, two-good, two-factor case. The course will help you to understand how trade benefits the world economy. It should also help you to think about the challenges and problems that arise from freer trade. We will also study the rationale and effects of trade blocs, including NAFTA and the EU. The course will include models of exchange rate adjustment and the benefits of fixed and floating rate regimes. We will deal with arguments for and against common currency arrangements such as Economic and Monetary Union in Europe.
Prereq: Principles of economics course (ECN 203) or permission of instructor.
