Course Description

ARC397 : Architectural Analysis and Design for Non-Majors

Description:

Students are introduced to the processes of architectural design and the methods of analysis of significant buildings and spaces. The course is organized to give the student an exposure to the conventions of architectural representation: the description of buildings and spaces in plan, section, elevation, and three-dimensional projections. Projects include a four-six week study and analysis of a particular building or space in Florence. It is assigned as an in-depth investigation of the elements that compose and regulate it, concentrating on the means of analysis appropriate to particular ideas and interpretations of architectural space, typology, and their latent qualities. A final design project is assigned to expose the student to the processes and production of architectural design. A fee to cover studio supplies will be billed from Syracuse (2009-10 fee = $80).
