HST300.1 : China Encounters the West: From the Qing Dynasty to the Early Republic Period
Description:
China's last dynasty, the Qing, began in 1644 with the conquest of China
by Manchu peoples from the far Northeast, and ended in 1911, with the
founding of the Chinese Republic. Far from being a mere dynasty in a long
succession of dynasties, historians now understand the Qing
was really a multiethnic empire among the most powerful in the world.
Qing Emperors ruled their Manchu, Mongol, Han Chinese, and Central Asian
subjects using complex and varied symbols of emperorship. The Qing was
also the first dynasty in Chinese history to face the challenges of
modernity and Western imperialism. This course surveys the political,
social, and cultural history of Qing China, using the great city of
Beijing, the Qing capital, as its backdrop.
