A pre-semester seminar in Ireland, "The Pale and Beyond" is offered during the fall and spring semesters.
Ireland is an island divided. The six counties in the north that make up Northern Ireland are part of the United Kingdom; the remaining twenty-six counties make up the independent Republic of Ireland. The Pale and Beyond seminar, based in Dublin and Belfast, the two major cities in this divided Ireland, offers students a unique opportunity to explore whether a shared sense of being Irish can exist despite the long history of struggle and separation between the largely Catholic south and the largely Protestant north.
This seminar carries three upper-division credits in Sociology (SOC 300.2).
