India:: Short Term Program

Painting and Drawing India - application due date extended to 10/30/09

PTG/DRW 300/500- Painting and Drawing India (4 credits)

The College of Visual and Performing Arts and SU Abroad are happy to offer once again a four-credit course, Drawing and Painting India. In this course you will visit North Central India to gather research materials that will enable you to complete a body of work based on your trip. You will travel to India during the winter break and complete the course during the 2010 spring semester.

India (1 credit)
The course will begin with a two week-trip to India during the winter break. You will depart late December for in New Delhi. From New Delhi you will tentatively go on to Nawalgarh, Jaipur, Agra and then return to New Delhi. The trip will include visits to museums, temples, workshops, crafts centers and markets, as well as visits with artists. While in India you will draw, take photos, and gather research materials. You will return to the states in January, before the start of the Spring semester.

Syracuse (3 credits)
You’ll spend the spring semester in Syracuse creating a body of work based on your experiences in India. The class will meet as a combined lecture/studio course for 4 1/2 hours once a week.

Class size will be limited to 12. The course is opened to undergraduate and graduate students. Students must enroll in both the Syracuse and India portions of the course. Preference is given to VPA students. Non-VPA students will need to submit a sample of their work with their application.

FACULTY
John Thompson works as a Painter, Illustrator, and Professor of Art at Syracuse University. He has been featured in Communication Arts magazine, Step-By-Step Graphics and Art Direction magazine.

The internationally known illustrator has won gold and silver medals from the Society of Illustrators, The New Jersey Art Directors Club, The Denver Art Directors Club, The Society of Illustrators of Los Angeles and the CEBA Award for Communication Excellence in Black Publishing and Advertising, as well as award s of excellence from Communication Arts magazine and Print magazine. John is the recipient of the 2006 Hamilton King Award for the best illustration of the year. As a children’s book illustrator he has won three American Library Association Notable Book Awards. John has recently been included in The Illustrator in America, 1860-2000 by Walt Reed.

In the fall of 2005 Professor Thompson traveled from New Delhi, Nawalgarh, Jaipur, Uttar Pradesh, and Agra gathering research for an exhibition of paintings that were exhibited in October 2006 in the Dean's Gallery of Crouse College. Professor Thompson has taken two classes to India since that show. The work shown in this flyer is both the Professor’s and students from the last trip in 2007-2008.

COST
Tuition for the course will be covered as part of regular spring semester tuition as long as you do not exceed 19 credits. The cost for the spring break component of the course will be approximately $4500 depending on enrollment. This cost includes round trip transportation from a New York area airport (Newark or JFK) to India, housing, daily breakfast and dinner, field trips, and entrance fees. It also includes all activities and services for which a separate fee is not charged. The final fee will be set once airfare and other expenses have been confirmed.

APPLICATION, SELECTION & PAYMENT PROCEDURES
Students will be expected to submit the special application* and a $60 non-refundable application fee to SU Abroad by October 12, 2009. All applications will be reviewed by an admissions committee made up of Professors Thompson and a SU Abroad representative. Students will be notified of their acceptance by October 26. Upon acceptance, $1500 non-refundable deposit is required to confirm your participation in the program. This is due by November 1st. Final payment is due December 11, 2009.

*New students should apply online at http://suabroad.syr.edu. For program please select “SU world partners” and state that you are interested in the India program in the essay section along with answering the essay questions. Students who have participated on an SU Abroad program may complete a returning SU Abroad applicant application.
