Course

"Ancient, Medieval, and Renaissance Rome" – May 2010 (2-credit)

This two-credit course takes place in the capital city of the Roman empire in classical times and the seat of Papal authority during the Middle Ages and Early Renaissance. Students will visit the Roman Forum (the political arena of Cicero and Caesar), the Colosseum (where gladiators fought), triumphal monuments of emperors Trajan, Titus, and Constantine, the Roman harbor town of Ostia, the Palatine and Capitoline hills (and their museums), the Pantheon, various Christian churches, Christian catacombs, the Vatican, and many other historical sites. The instructors will bring ancient Rome to life, conducting lectures and discussions on-site. An excursion is planned to Naples, where we will visit the spectacular ruins of ancient Pompeii and the equally spectacular Archaeological Museum of Naples. Students will explore Rome’s rich historical legacy from the classical period to the Renaissance, as we will visit all of the most important museums and medieval and Renaissance churches in Rome and Vatican city, and experience Rome’s many exquisite culinary and cultural treasures.

Class size limited to 25. Students who enroll in this course must participate in the scheduled meetings during the Spring 2010 term, complete reading assignments before the end of term, and submit their research papers to the instructors on the first day in Rome. They will also write their final exercise on a particular monument or art-piece on-site on the final day in Rome.
