Course
ART 431/631: "Art Nouveau Design and Architecture" (4-credit)
This course seeks to bring together students from Museum Studies, Art Education, Fine Arts, Studio Arts, and Architecture to examine the Art Nouveau movement in Europe and the United States. Using recent exhibition catalogues and seminal texts, this course will acquaint students with the historical and social context that gave rise to this movement, the various manifestations of this movement, and the important practitioners and promoters of Art Nouveau.
The course consists of three major components: an introductory seminar, an in-depth research paper and presentation, and a unique study abroad experience in Europe, visiting three key Art Nouveau cities.
During the spring semester, lectures, class discussions, and short written assignments will build a basic knowledge of Art Nouveau and its background. Armed with this knowledge, we will travel together to in May to Brussels, Barcelona and Glasgow, the three important centers of Art Nouveau activity in fin-de-siècle Europe. While in Europe we will take guided architectural tours of the city, visit important museums and cultural centers, and dine in Art Nouveau cafés.
Enrollment is limited to 15 students.
