Course

"GER 300- Berlin: Capital of the New Germany (1 credits)" – Spring Break

Berlin is one of the most vibrant and interesting cities of Europe. This program will provide you with an opportunity to experience contemporary Berlin, discover politically, culturally and historically important places, visit multicultural Kreuzberg, take trips to museums displaying the history of divided Berlin, gain an understanding of the two different systems and German states, show them everyday life and oppression in the GDR, persecution and resistance in Berlin during the Nazi era. The trip will also focus on the question how history is preserved (or erased), how for example the memory of the Holocaust is publicly displayed today. Most importantly, you will gain an understanding of the ongoing process of change in Berlin, to a unified and at the same time increasingly diverse city in the heart of Europe and the EU.

Class size is limited to 15 students and is open to students who are taking GER 102 in the spring of 2010 or are enrolled in higher division courses (e.g., GER 200 and up). Students not enrolled in a German course but have knowledge of Germany may also apply.

Faculty

Karina von Trippelskirch is Assistant Professor of German and a native of both German states. She grew up in the GDR and studied German Language and Literature and Cultural Anthropology in Marburg, then West Germany. She received among other fellowships a Postdoc Fellowship of the DAAD, the German Academic Exchange Service. She maintains close ties with the DAAD and hopes that the trip, if approved, will be supported with a travel grant for participating students. Prof. von Tippelskirch has been to Berlin many times. Recently, she visited SU’s World Partner Program at the FU and the places to be visited on the proposed trip. She is currently teaching a new course for the German Program at the Department of Languages, Literatures, and Linguistics: “Berlin: City, Literature, History.”
