Course

CFS 400.1/600.1 – Global Youth Development in Action- Comparing and Contrasting Systems in the U.K., Netherlands and U.S. (1 credit)

This course is designed to provide students with knowledge about positive youth development. Specifically, students will learn about individual, family and community qualities that support adolescents in their journey to adulthood. There will be an emphasis on understanding how adults and various community programs provide the key components that are necessary for young people to successfully navigate their adolescent years. Best practices in the youth development field will be explored along with the importance of evaluating programs to identify effective interventions. Since youth development takes many different forms both in the U.S. and abroad, cross-cultural practices will also be studied and compared. In the U.K and the Netherlands, you will spend your time between seminar sessions and visits to youth centers with the goal of comparing these practices and contrasting them with those in the U.S.

Class size is limited to 15 students. There are no pre or co-requisites for this course. This is a one credit seminar that is connected to the 3 credit CFS 400/600 which will be offered in Spring 2010. Permission of the Instructor is required if students have not taken CFS 400/600 (however, students with related courses such as adolescent development will be considered for the course).

Costs

The extra credit earned for a short-term program abroad is registered during the same semester as the related on-campus course(s)/ sessions. This means that SU undergraduates pay no additional tuition charge for the overseas program, as long as they have not exceeded the 19-credit limit for the semester. Graduate students and non-SU students do pay a per credit tuition charge for the additional credit/s earned during the program abroad. The fee for the travel portion of the course is approximately $4,570 and includes round-trip transportation from a New York City airport to Europe, housing, some group meals, ground transportation, and entrance fees. It also includes all activities and services for which a separate fee is not charged. The final fee will be set once airfare and other expenses have been confirmed.
