Course

HTW 400/600: Addictions in Cultural Context (1 credit)

This short-term program coupled with the spring semester on-campus course HTW 408/HTW 608 of the same name, explores the role played by drugs in different societies, and follows the dissemination of different substances in the process of cultural encounters. The on-campus course will cover an historic analysis of the changing pattern of drug use in global societies, beginning with the function of drugs as trading commodities as a trigger for capital accumulation, economic development, and as a source of state revenue at different stages in history. In addition the course examines the use of drugs among modern youth and sub cultures, as well as the response by the cultural mainstream. Furthermore the course will include a broad comparison of the use and function of different substances within different cultures, including coca in the Andean region, opium in South and Eastern Asia, cannabis in North Africa and the Caribbean, and Khat in the Horn of Africa. Development issues with regard to cash cropping and rural livelihoods will be covered and prepare the way for a consideration of the politics of drug control at an international level.

At the end of the spring semester you have the option of traveling to the Netherlands. There you will visit regional programs to learn about the Dutch prevention based public health approach to alcohol, other drugs, and addictive behaviors. You will hear from Dutch experts in the addiction arena and visit what the Dutch call “coffee shops” and “smart shops”.

On-campus class size is limited to 40 students. The short-term trip in May is optional, and will be limited to 20 students. You are required to take the on-campus course, HTW 408/HTW 608, to qualify for the May trip. All HTW students are eligible for the course.

Costs

The extra credit earned for a short-term program abroad is registered during the same semester as the related on-campus course. This means that SU undergraduates pay no additional tuition charge for the overseas program, as long as they have not exceeded the 19-credit limit for the semester. Graduate students pay a per credit tuition charge for the additional credit earned during the program abroad. A program fee is charged to all students and is approximately $2,550. The fee includes round trip transportation from a New York City airport to Amsterdam, housing, some group meals, ground transportation, and entrance fees. It also includes all activities and services for which a separate fee is not charged. The final fee will be set once airfare and other expenses have been confirmed.
