What can I study?
Take a look at all our summer programs and courses: https://suabroad.syr.edu/programs/summer/
We offer a wide variety of topics and programs both at the graduate and undergraduate levels. We offer internships, traveling seminars, language study, field studies and courses.
Are summer programs just like the semester program, only shorter and smaller?
Summer programs are different from the semester programs. Most programs are arranged by specific classes and/or location. Some programs are strictly internship programs. In Florence and Madrid, you are given the opportunity to pick from a variety of courses in order to design your own schedule. We encourage you to take a look at the various programs, classes, and location. If you have any questions please contact our office.
How do I apply?
The application can be filled out online: https://suabroad.syr.edu/applications/summer
The application requires the name and email address of an academic recommender, four essay questions, and biographical information.
Is there an application fee?
Yes, there is a $60 application fee. Please see the application information page for information on payment options. https://suabroad.syr.edu/applications/summer
When is the application deadline?
The deadline for all our applications is March 1, 2010. Some of the internship programs have a deadline of February 15, 2010 or earlier. Please check program websites for details.
Are non-Syracuse University students eligible to apply for summer programs?
Yes, any student currently enrolled in a US or Canadian college or university is eligible to apply for a summer program. In fact, in 2009 over 30% of summer program participants were from schools other than SU. There are a couple of programs that are currently only open to Syracuse University students. Please check to see if there are specific eligibility requirements for each program.
What makes summer programs so unique?
Summer is an especially inviting time to study in a foreign country. The weather is warm, people are relaxed, and classes are smaller and more informal. You can choose from more than 35 accredited summer programs in Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America, and the Middle East, some of which offer experiences that are not available during the semester. And because you can work full-time, summer is also the perfect time to pursue that chance-of-a-lifetime internship.
Can I apply for more than one program?
We recommend that you apply for only one program at a time. If you are not accepted or the program is full, then you will be asked if you have a second choice and would like to switch your application. Most of the programs run simultaneously so it would be difficult to participate in more than one program. If there are two programs that you would like to do in one summer, please contact our office so we can make those arrangements.
Can I do an internship?
Yes! We offer a variety of internship options for students during the summer. Summer is a great time to do an internship. You can earn academic credit and gain experience. An internship also looks great on your resume. See more information on our internship programs and courses on the website. https://suabroad.syr.edu/programs/summer
Are there any language requirements?
Most of our programs do not have any language requirements. Almost all courses are taught in English. Be sure to check the various website descriptions for more information.
What if I want to learn a new language or improve my language skills?
Summer is a great time to either learn a new language or improve your foreign language skills. Most of our programs offer intensive language classes. You can also live with a host family and immerse yourself in the culture and language.
Can I study abroad more than once?
Of course! You can participate on multiple summer or even semester programs. Make sure you speak to your faculty advisor to be sure you are taking the correct courses and are on track to graduate. If you do study abroad again or have already been on one of our programs, you may be eligible for a Stay & Save grant. https://suabroad.syr.edu/about/cost/grantsAndAid/consecutiveTerm
Do you offer any financial aid?
Yes, we offer study abroad grant awards which range between $300 and $2,000. These are based on a student’s financial need, as determined by their FAFSA or other supporting documents. https://suabroad.syr.edu/pdf/application/Tuition%20Grant%20Application.pdf
How much does the program cost?
The cost varies depending on which program you choose and will include the tuition and other fees, plus living and traveling expenses. The number of credits you register for and the type of course you enroll in will also affect the cost. Airfare is not included in the cost of the program unless otherwise noted. Also, please be aware that food may or not be included in the program fee. Also note that course fees are billed after registration. Be sure to read the details of each program on the website.
How will I find out my application status?
Application review typically takes about two weeks. You will be notified via email and sent additional information in the mail. You will also be contacted if your application is incomplete. Please complete your application as soon as possible to ensure quick turnaround.
What do I do once I have been accepted into the program?
Congratulations! Once you have been accepted into the program you will receive more information on the program. You will also be asked to fill out various post-acceptance forms. Please see the Accepted Students section on this website.
What are the financial implications if I withdraw from the program?
The $500 program deposit is non-refundable. Depending on when you withdraw, we may have to charge you for committed program fees and or tuition charges. Please see our refund policy in the Study Abroad Handbook.
What are the living accommodations?
Options range by program and include apartments, homestays and hotels. Please see the website for more information.
Can I participate after I graduate?
Yes, we have students who participate as non-matriculated students. You can also push your graduation date back until August and participate on the program. This will still allow you to walk with your class but pay undergraduate tuition.
Are programs ever cancelled?
SU Abroad reserves the right to cancel any programs due to low enrollment, including after the start of the program for security, health, safety or other reasons. Syracuse University reserves the right to cancel any program at any time when deemed appropriate due to unforeseen circumstances.
What resources are available to LGBT students who want to go abroad?
SU Abroad is grateful for the support of the Syracuse University LGBT Resource Center, which provides education, advocacy, and support to the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, questioning, and straight-allied students, staff, faculty, parents, and alumni of Syracuse University. While many of our centers may not have the resources to provide extensive programming and services for all LGBT students, we strive to create a safe space for students on our programs, offering academic courses and student support staff to encourage awareness of the issues important to this community. If you have specific questions or concerns about how we accommodate LGBT students on our programs overseas, please contact SU Abroad directly.
