Diversity in the Workplace: A Strategic Human Resources Practicum

What You Need to Know

The Human Resources practicum programme is designed to give you a balanced perspective on the increasingly important global functions of the new marketplace – the world. While diversity in the workplace is a very popular topic in strategic Human Resource Management (HRM), many companies in North America and Europe face major problems in converting their white male-based structures and orientations into those that can support and facilitate true diversity. This practicum will, through a range of site visits among MNCs in London and in-depth strategic analysis, explore the contemporary issues in diversity. Students will also have the opportunity to participate on a team practicum experience with specific companies, thus gaining real life and resume building experience.

Perhaps no organizational issue facing firms in the US as well as many other countries has attracted as much attention as diversity in the workforce. Specifically, there will be more women, minority group members, and older workers, suggesting a more heterogeneous workforce, which is a significant departure from the largely homogeneous workforces in many countries. Whereas the notion of diversity brings with it opportunities for organizations, it poses serious challenges as well.

While this course will provide an overall view of strategic HRM, a major focus will be on one of the most serious challenges and fundamental inconsistencies surrounding the notion of workplace diversity. That is, while there are many claims in the US as well as European countries that diversity (or heterogeneity) is valued, a large percentage of contemporary HRM practices (e.g., selection, promotion, etc.) simply encourage, reinforce, and allow only similarity (i.e., homogeneity).

In the global economy of today, organizations cannot afford to waste resources. Indeed, organizations can achieve competitive advantage through the most effective utilization of their entire workforce's competencies and talents.

Students will be assigned to project teams and these teams will be balanced to ensure a mix of disciplines and experiences.

The condensed nature of the summer practicum program will mean that you will gain valuable real life experience which will not only benefit you but also provide important input to your sponsoring organisation.

The program runs for seven weeks. Your work assignment and experience will be unique—but every student gains the invaluable experience of performing meaningful work in a culturally diverse international setting. Final team/client placements are made overseas.
