What You Need to Know
The College of Engineering at Syracuse University has approved a series of internships and independent study projects to be conducted in cooperation with the engineering laboratories at the Universidad Polytecnica de Madrid. The program is designed for engineering students in all major areas of engineering: aerospace, civil, mechanical, electrical, qualified chemical, bioengineering and computer science. A high level of Spanish is required for most internships.
If you chose to work on a University project, you’ll be placed on a team of doctoral students and faculty working in collaboration with members of one of many University partner firms located in Madrid. Students who choose an internship will carry out research in an engineering firm in Madrid.
You may request specific information regarding projects for credit pre-approval. Since the projects are ongoing, the nature of the work may vary at the time of arrival.
Students must take one of the three-credit engineering courses. Students who choose the engineering research project register for Independent Study credit (e.g. AEE 490 for undergraduates and AEE 690 for graduates). Students who choose the internship register for Experience credit (e.g. AEE 470 for undergraduates and AEE 670 for graduates). Students in 2009 are given the option of selecting the number of credits they will register for, between 1 and 3 credits. Please notify SU Abroad at the time of application to the program if you are interested in considering registering for fewer than 3 credits.
In most accredited B.S. engineering programs in the United States, limited elective credits may be taken as independent study credits. With approval from the major advisor, you can register for courses in the major, for example aerospace (AEE), civil (CIE), mechanical (MEE), electrical (ELE), computer (CSE), chemical (CEN), bioengineering (BEN), and computer science (CIS).
John LaGraff Ph.D., Oxford University, is professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering at the L.C. Smith College of Engineering at Syracuse University. He is the Syracuse University engineering foreign study coordinator. Students are encouraged to contact Professor LaGraff by e-mail: jlagraff@syr.edu.
You will be expected to devote at least 100 hours of work in a supervised laboratory environment, and to prepare a comprehensive final written report and, in some cases, to prepare an oral report of the work.
You must have a high level of Spanish to qualify for an engineering internship.
Field Trip
There will be guided study tours to Barcelona and Andalucia arranged by SU Abroad for all SU Abroad summer programs in Spain. The cost is included in the engineering program fee.
Participants arrange and pay for their own transatlantic flights to Madrid.
Advantage Travel has arranged a group flight for students on this program. We encourage students to travel on the group flight, which includes ground transportation upon arrival. Please review and complete the attached group travel sign-up form to express an interest in being included on the group flight. No payment or commitment is required to complete this form. Summer flights book early, so request your seats now. Updated 2010 information will be available soon.
Please note that while we encourage students to pursue flight arrangements, we would not encourage you to purchase your airline tickets before confirming that the program and courses you plan to take will be offered in 2010. Please request written notification from us that you can book your flight. You will have to present this notification if we cancel the program at a later date, and you want to be reimbursed for the cost of the ticket.
You will be housed in private homes with hosts who provide breakfast and dinner daily.
If you choose to arrange and pay for your own housing, you must notify the SU Abroad office of your independent living arrangements at the time of application.
